Japan

Updated: May 22, 2019

In Japan, piercings aren't as common as the rest of the world. The younger generation tend to have piercings. Ear piercings are fairly common but others, such as lip or nose piercings, are discouraged. Although in areas like Harajuku, nobody will give a second glance to someone with a lip ring. Gender also plays a big role in the acceptance of piercings in Japan. For example, the girls in Japan are not looked at strangely if they have an ear piercing, but boys who have an ear piercing are frowned upon. The fact that most schools don't allow piercings, because of strict school uniform systems, has a great impact on the percentage of people in Japan who have piercings. Here are some statistics for you, 85% of people who live in Japan say they have no piercings when that leaves only 15% of people with piercings. This issue simply confirms that piercings are not popular in Japan.
