Writer's picture: L.I.N.CL.I.N.C

The Aztecs and Mayans were originally from Mexico. They both pierced their tongues to honor their Gods. Among the Mayan culture, they wore tongue piercings, but they didn't exactly wear them for jewelry purposes. They would wear these tongue piercings for ceremonial occasions, specifically to draw blood. Women in Central America were considered more attractive if they had lip labrets and they also wore lip plugs that represent the warriors. They pierced their septum with gold and jade which signified the water and sun gods. The Aztecs wore ear spools that were made of wood, bones, or leather. They believed the more modifications they had, the higher status they would earn. The Aztecs and Mayans preferred the ears and tongue for piercing and for enlargement. Aztecs and Mayans were considered beautiful based on their piercings by it telling social statuses and a green or jaded color was popular.
